The Music Reflected the Times
I created this playlist of popular songs from 1918, including Tiger Rag, which Ida Livingston mentioned in However Long the Day. These are all tunes the main characters—Niall and Flora, Frederick and Ida—would have listened to. I did my best to find the original recordings from vinyl (you can hear a lot of popping!) to get the proper effect.
This music reflects the broader changes in the United States at the time, a combination of early jazz and wartime patriotics, of laissez-faire and revolution, the blackface of vaudeville and the black musicians in the band.
